General description of the institution (including type and status)

The Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (hereinafter AMU) is a public university-level educational institution under Act no. 111/1998 Coll., on higher education institutions including amendments to some other acts (the Higher Education Act), as amended.

AMU was established by Presidential Decree no. 127/1945 Coll., of 27 October 1945. AMU has registered offices in Prague and Beroun.

AMU is a higher education institution with an artistic focus. Its areas of expertise include dramatic arts, music, dance, audio-visual arts, photography, multimedia and related fields, as well as scholarly and research activities. An integral part of the instruction, cultivation and development of these arts is their history, theoretical instruction and reflexes.

AMU is a legal entity.

AMU places strong emphasis on the area of international cooperation with arts schools in Europe and beyond. AMU and its constituents freely and independently establish, develop and cultivate these international relationships, which serve to promote art and culture, and to enhance education.
