How to search for documents from the FAMU Library collection

The FAMU library collection contains:
more than 18 000 books, scripts and related specialist magazines
more than 3 400 university work assignments
more than 4 400 videocassettes
more than 6 000 DVDs

All FAMU library collections are processed in an electronic catalogue.

What, how and where to search:

1. In the electronic catalogue CARMEN, which can be permanently accessed from any point, including from outside the library.

You can search under: the general type of document, types of document, author, title, actor, director, genre, subject shelf-mark, publisher, etc.

In a single base the electronic catalogue contains records of:

- books: older records; these sometimes do not contain all data
- university work assignments (theses)
- related magazines
- films on video cassette
- films on DVD
- FAMU student films
(gradually being compiled)

After searching for the document you require you should check all the shelf-marks mentioned in the records and also whether the document is in the right place. Then give your requests to the staff to handle.

If you are not in the library you can reserve (or prolong) a document using the electronic catalogue CARMEN.

Video records are only accessible in the electronic catalogue and ONLY on the video room premises.

Theses are available:
a) printed only in the library according to applicable regulations
b) since 2006 in a digital repository system, Dspace at AMU (often including full versions).

2. Free selection (books):

Each subject is divided into sub-categories:
monographs – classified according to person (photographer, film personality, art director, philosopher etc.)
history – classified according to title or relevant area (national cinematography)
theory – classified by title
technology – classified by title
scripts (from all subjects) – classified by title

Books removed from the shelves which you do not want to borrow should be left on the nearest desk.

Works of fiction can be ordered from the depository and will be available the day after being requested.

3. In standard Card Catalogues

The Card Catalogues are accessible in the electronic form also

You can browse here as if in drawers, although it’s not possible to search in them according to conditions.
