Erasmus+ and BREXIT

The status of Erasmus+ / ESC Programme (2014-2020 call) participation- The decision regarding the future arrangements does not affect the UK’s participation in the E+ and ESC (2014-2020 call) programmes and we will continue to manage the E+/ESC funded projects between 2021-2025. Participants who study, train, volunteer or spend time abroad through Erasmus+ and ESC exchanges that were successfully bid for during the current Erasmus+ and ESC programmes (2014-2020) will be able to participate for the full duration of their exchange. This covers UK participants going abroad, as well as international participants coming to the UK.  

Future activities - The UK government has published a statement regarding the Turing scheme, a new international student mobility scheme programme to replace the UK’s participation in Erasmus+. This will provide funding for outgoing HE, VET and School student mobility placements starting in September 2021. The new scheme will operate for 1 year initially and will be administered by our British Council and Ecorys partnership. Partner countries will need to have national/institutional funding if they would like to send participants to UK. We are working closely with Department for Education and we expect more information about the scheme to be available shortly – best to keep an eye on our transition page https://www.erasmusplus.org.uk/the-transition-period at the moment.

VISAs - For those travelling to the UK after 31 December 2020 please be aware that you may need to meet specific requirements in respect of your visit. Erasmus+ participants travelling to the UK for work or volunteering placements of any duration will require a VISA, however, study placements of less than 6 months do not require a visa. Participants can check if they need a visa here. A healthcare surcharge may be part of the visa application process. We’re unable to provide any further information or respond to queries relating to the changes to the immigration rules that come into effect on 1 January 2021. We recommend that sending organisations in your country refer to the UK Government guidance.

For example in some cases the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may no longer be valid for UK Nationals travelling to other European countries after 31 December 2020.
