The trajectories of our life and career journeys can be straightforward, or they can be convoluted, with many sharp turns, nooks and crannies, and detours along the way. The changes and challenges that life has in store for us can be great. What matters most is that they eventually lead to a happy and fulfilled life – and not just in career terms. The following stories of personalities from among AMU graduates illustrate this statement.
Cinematographer Adéla Márová says that pursuing multiple jobs is second nature for her and something she has been doing for many years. “I graduated from The high art and technical school in Český Krumlov in applied painting. Then I took a master’s programme in multimedia design at the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. The great advantage of this programme was that it allowed me to pursue a number of art disciplines. I tried theatre, animation, graphic art, design… That’s also where I made the decision to focus on cinematography and apply for FAMU,” she recalls noting that her son Samuel was born while she was still a student, which made her search for a job after graduation even more difficult. “The cinematographer job means you have to be available virtually at any time. Shooting takes place day and night, and I couldn’t reconcile that with being a mother,” she explains why she eventually got a job at the National Gallery’s Trade Fair Palace in Prague where she is in charge of capturing exhibitions, exhibition launches, and press conferences. “That’s the most fun to me – the action, the people… I love documentary cinema and photography, and this job is close. Most importantly, I get to photograph paintings, graphic works, negatives, and catalogues,” explains Adéla. She has not abandoned cinematography, though. “Right now, I am developing my own project and filming a full-length documentary with the title of WHY WOMEN LOVE THE FLAMENCO in Prague and in Granada, Spain,” says the artist and admits that dancing is close to her heart. “Whenever dancing pops up, I try to go there and see it or collaborate on a project. I shoot documentaries on dancing and dance videos in theatres,” she recounts. Right now, she is also facing a new challenge – teaching. “I will teach filmmaking at The high art and technical school in Český Krumlov where I studied. That’s something completely new to me. I will have to study, and am looking forward to that. I still work in the field that I studied and diversity what I love about it the most. In fact, I love to keep learning. For example, I am learning to lead my own film crew right now,” concludes Adéla.
