Territories of Art 2026: Territories of Uncertainty – Art in an Era of Permanent Crisis
How should we think about art in a world that is losing its stable contours? In an age when crises do not simply follow one another, but instead layer upon one another, spill over, and become a permanent horizon of experience? How does art respond to the climate crisis, armed conflicts, economic instability, or the rapid rise of artificial intelligence? And what new ways of understanding the world can art offer, especially in times of uncertainty?
Territories of Art is an annual doctoral conference of Czech and Slovak art universities, organized by the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague since 2014. The platform connects emerging researchers and artists from the fields of artistic research and art history, creating a space for sharing current topics, methodological approaches, and open professional debate.
This year’s edition, which will take place on November 6 at the Theater of Inspiration at AMU, is framed by the theme “Territories of Uncertainty: Art in an Era of Permanent Crisis.” Contributions may address issues of temporality, anticipation, anxiety, resilience, or the imagination of the future, and seek answers to how art reflects, processes, or co-creates our ideas about the world. The theoretical framework of the conference includes, among others, the concepts of precariousness, the anthropocene, and posthumanism.
We are accepting proposals for papers until July 19, 2026
The Territories of Art offer a unique opportunity to gain insight into what research at art schools looks like today and what topics resonate with the current generation of researchers. Presented projects also reflect the characteristic “AMU DNA”—interdisciplinarity, openness to experimentation, critical thinking, and the integration of theoretical reflection with artistic practice.
The conference is also open to master’s students considering doctoral studies. They can familiarize themselves with the environment of artistic research, draw inspiration from current topics, and get a sense of what a professional academic presentation looks like.
